Andy Nisbet's Bio
Andy Nisbet developed his desire to teach while majoring in Professional Golf Management at Mississippi State University. In the years since, Andy has enthusiastically set out to be a great instructor of the golf swing. He has steadily built a reputation as an instructor for players at any level.
Andy began his career studying and observing under well-known pros such as Hank Haney, Terri Anthony-Ryan, Rick Martino, Virgil Helling, Rick Stocke, and Cody Barden. After working as a Golf Professional at The Country Club of Birmingham(Birmingham, AL) he took a job working for Beech Woods Golf Course in Southfield, MI. He took over a junior program that had 65 kids annually and grew it to over 450 in 3 years. This drive and passion for junior golf led Andy to California where he was hired to be Director of Instruction at Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore.
Andy Nisbet works with his students to develop an accurate plan to improve the flight of their golf ball. By giving cause and effect analogies, coupled with physical hands on examples, they create a relationship that will produce positive results. The impact position is the basis of Andy's philosophy.
Andy has taught touring professionals from Japanese and Asian tours, over 250 college players, and countless players aspiring to improve.
Andy is a PGA Professional, where he has been recognized for what he does in trying to grow the game of golf. Along with many other accolades, Andy donates a huge percentage of his time to junior golf. From free lessons for underprivileged youth, to organizing the Tri-Valley Middle School Golf League with over 250 youth, Andy continues to give back to the community.
Andy Nisbet's Philosophy and Quotes
"My philosophy as a teacher is to have my students become their own best teacher. I feel it is important to get them to understand the flight of the golf ball and how it relates to their swing."
In an article for USKIDSGOLF on November 2006, Andy Nisbet wrote:
"Many times parents and kids get too focused on the golf swing and forget about scoring. Kids come to golf lessons wanting to have a swing like Tiger, when in reality that type of swing does not suit them. Kids today cannot improve because teachers and parents are always changing things every lesson and the child has a new swing or thought every week. Goals are the key to success and giving a child a clear gameplan to acheive those goals is important. In order for a junior to truly excel, they must have guidance on swing, but focus on learning how to practice more efficiently to improve."
In an article for PGA Juniorlinks.com on January 2008, Andy Nisbet wrote:
"We as professionals have to balance our teaching the golf swing with teaching kids how to practice. Kids and parents go to the driving range for hours thinking this will make them better. I see so many kids who put in time at the range, and do not get results on the course. Spend at least 1 lesson on the course with junior golfers for every 2 you put in on the range. Kids will love playing, and you learn so much from watching them on the course then you ever would on the range!"

Putting Practice for the Week:
CIRCLE OF TRUST
Working on rhythm on short putts
1. Put 8 balls in a circle, 3-feet away
2. This practice drill is must be done while counting to 4 out loud
3. #1 is looking at the hole, #2 is looking back at the ball, #3 is at the peak of the putting stroke, #4 is hitting the ball (You can replace the #4 with the word release)
4. Remember to keep your head at the ball and dont worry about watching the ball go in the hole.
5. Also, try to see how many sets of 8 in a row you can make. No matter what number you achieve, the next practice session that number must be beat.
SPEED DRILL
Tiger's favorite drill for learning speed
1. Set up 3 tees at 12, 14, and 16 feet
2. Pick one of the tees as your target and set up over the ball
3. Close your eyes and hit the putts while you guess the distance
4. After you hit the putt, open your eyes and see how dialed in you are with your feel
12 Questions that golf coaches may not want to hear.....but you HAVE to ask!!!
1. What are your creditionals? Are you PGA/LPGA Professional?
2. What are the differences in the way you teach juniors verses adults?
3. Will you be changing my swing? If so, why?
4. Do you teach a pre-determined or "one-size fits all" swing? Meaning does everybody learn the same swing?
5. Will I have the same Instructor the entire time or I do I switch Instructors with each activity?
6. Do you provide your Golf Instructors with additional training besides their PGA training? If so, can you explain how they receive additional training?
7. Will there be an overall, dynamic plan that addresses my game and ensures I reach my goals? Or is my lesson program predetermined regardless of my skills or needs?
8. What if results don't stay a month later, or 10 months later?
9. Do you believe in the philosophy that "I will get worse before I get better"?
10. Do you include On-course Instruction? If so, what do your Instructors focus on with me on the golf course?
11. Why will your teaching methods stay with me in the next week and/or next year?
12. Do you consider my physical abilities and time available for play when I get back home when giving instruction, teaching drills and advice?

Andy Nisbet answers the 12-question test!
I am a class A PGA Professional. I have been teaching junior golfers now for 12 years. I played college golf at Mississippi State University as well as a few professional tournament. I have been awarded as one of the Top 50 Teachers in America for kids by US Kids Golf for 3 years in a row and am continuosly involved with junior golf on a daily basis.
Junior golfers cannot be taught the same as adults. A swing that works for Tiger Woods, will not work for a 9-year old. My philosophy with kids is to try and work out the swing flaws, without talking over their heads. They have to understand why things do what they do and understanding the flight of the ball is a great first step. For teenage golfers, I first find out their goals and layout a detailed plan for success. I work with every golfer individually and figure out the best ways for improvement.
We only make swing changes if their is a problem. We do not change things for "looks", The order of importance in a golf shot is - SOLID contact, then STRAIGHT ball flight, then DISTANCE on shots. We must work in that order to ensure success.
NEVER! If we looked at some of the greatest players ever they all swing it differently. Tiger, Palmer, Nicklaus....all different! One of the best players in the world is Jim Furyk and if he came for a lesson I would not start the lesson by changing his backswing. I do think the only position that every high level player achieves is a solid impact position. So if a player is doing something that effects their impact position, it must be changed.
MORE COMING SOON!
GRIP was developed because Andy Nisbet watched to many junior golfers not know how to or what to practice. A huge element of GRIP is setting goals. Every participant must set goals for the both short term and long term success. Once goals are set, each participant is given a detailed plan for to reach their goals.
Learning how to practice on your own is the cornerstone to the GRIP Program.
Another tear of GRIP is the level of instruction you receive.
Course management and learning how to play is imperative to GRIP Golfer's success.
Analysis is the last crucial step

GRIP Practice Sessions
12:00 pm on Saturdays at Las Positas
GRIP AND GRIP PREMIER STUDENTS WELCOME
Grip Practice Sessions are designed to give GRIP participants a chance to hit range balls and practice on their own. At the end of every GRIP Practice Session a series of competitions are held in different areas on the range. Participants are divided by age group and compete in front of parents, friends, and other golfers. This PGA Tour style competition puts kids in the "spotlight" and makes them feel a great deal of pressure in areas of the game where they feel it the most. As they start to deal better with the pressure, they become better golfers!

Clubhead speed and golf balls
I thought golfers and non golfers would be interested in seeing the below video.
No one has a swing speed of 150 mph, inlcuding Tiger Woods who is just under 130 mph.
3 facts about golf balls:
1. The Pro V-1 ball by Titleist is actually a three part ball, but you have to have a club head speed of AT LEAST 100 mph or more to be able to compress all 3 stages of the ball. If you don't, the ball ball never fully compresses and you don't get the distance the professionals get.
2. Junior golfers will get more distance out of a balls that only has 2 stages of compression....Like the Titleist NG Tour. It is more suited to normal swing speeds and they can compress it upon impact and can it further than the PRO-V1 ball.
3. So the secret is not to buy the most expensive balls out there because they are actually decreasing the distance they can hit the ball.
Watch this video, this shows what a golf ball goes through when hit at 150 mph....its amazing when you see this video that golf balls last as long as they do!
